At Des Sol, we proudly manufacture our EV1 shock absorbers and internal components in-house, giving us complete control over the quality of each component. Join us as we break down the original Jimny shock as well as an upgraded shock absorber found in a 50mm lift kit from a well-known competitor.
Shafts
In the picture below, we can clearly see the difference between the EV1 and the rest, but not so much between the competitor and the OE. This is because they use roughly the same thickness shaft. Having a thicker shaft ultimately adds strength to the shock absorbers. The extra length of our shafts also gives you more suspension travel, allowing you to keep your wheels on the ground to maintain traction when you are off-roading.

Pistons
Looking at the pistons, the OE and aftermarket pistons utilise the same cast design concept and are manufactured from similar material. The EV1 piston is a machined component to our unique design and specification, with every aspect of performance and adjustability in mind. The larger EV1 piston allows for more fine-tuning. The easiest way to explain this is to think of baking a cake: if you bake a small cake and add or remove 20 grams of salt, it will have a greater impact on the taste compared to adding or removing 20 grams of salt from a big cake.

“The Salt”. These little silver shims are responsible for controlling your shock dampening and ultimately determine the on-road and off-road behavior of your vehicle. Different shock absorbers utilise a different combination of these shims to determine the dampening of the shock.
